Tanker Crash Could Have Been A Disaster

It’s a small miracle that last week’s tanker fire on the 401 near Gananoque Thursday night wasn’t much, much worse.

No serious injuries have been reported after two tires on the driver’s side went up in flames, narrowly avoiding setting off more than 50-thousand litres of gas.

While it caused major traffic delays until midday Friday, the work of local fire crews prevented an explosion that would have damaged several more cars and local homes.

Solar Panels Coming To Shopping Centre?

Solar panels could be coming to the Brockville Shopping Centre.

Ottawa-based SolPowered Energy Corporation is looking for local council support as they apply for Ontario’s Feed-In Tariff program.

Putting up the panels would be part of a 20-year deal and they would have a peak capacity of 500 kilowatts.

Beauty and the Breast Coming Up Next Week

The Mill Restaurant will be decorated with hues of fushia for May 7th.

That’s when the community can enjoy a dinner, fashion show, raffle and silent auction in support of the fight against breast cancer.

It’s the annual “Beauty and the Breast” fundraiser with all the proceeds going to BGH so they can purchase single-use biopsy guns to aid in the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Transport Fires Near Prescott and Gan Snarling Traffic

A section of the 401 near Prescott has reopened this morning after a transport went up in flames.

It happened around two AM in the Eastbound lanes just after the 416 ramp.

No word yet from police if there were any injuries.

Another transport fire has closed the 401 westbound between Gananoque and Joyceville Road as crews are working to remove it.

Crime Stats Released

A quarter of the way into 2012, the calls for service from Brockville Police were down two and a half percent from the same time last year.

Crime is down nearly across the board including assaults, thefts and mischief which are way down.

Disturbances and noise complaints are on the rise, however, climbing about 25 percent.

More than 16-hundred volunteers have signed up for tomorrow’s community-wide cleanup.

They’ll be tidying more than 50 Brockville parks between nine and noon, and if you want to help, get in contact with the volunteer centre.

There’s a “Thank You” BBQ at Hardy Park afterwards.

Fatal Crash Acquittal

A young man involved in a wreck that killed an 18-year-old minor hockey player near Spencerville three years ago has been acquitted of causing his death.

The courts have ruled that there is not enough proof to show that Tyler Curry was driving a minivan while drunk that hit a tree and caught fire on County Road 44 in August of ’09.

Dylan Heisel died in the crash.

Partygoers had testified seeing a drunken Curry get behind the wheel, however witnesses of the crash saw Mason Arnell come out of the drivers seat.

Curry still faces sentencing for drunk driving.

No Timmies In Prescott?!?

Getting your fix in Prescott is a little difficult today.

Tim Horton’s was hit by a small electrical fire yesterday and while the Fire Department says it didn’t do too much damage, they had to shut down power and Timmies is now closed.

They expect it to last for a day or two.

Hydroplane Races On Canada Day Coming, Not Completely Resolved

City hall expects Hydroplane Races will be taking place on the Canada Day long weekend this year.

That’s the word from the Mayor, however how or if they will be using Blockhouse Island is still up in the air.

Organizers and boat operators have been given another week to hammer things out.

There were concerns that shutting down Blockhouse’s slips would hurt cruiseships on one of their busiest weekends.
